Any
Special Review For Movie Any Day Now
Too much of "Any Day Now" founders in cliche and predictable table-turning and point-scoring instead of building a set of complicated characters at odds with a biased system.
Michael Phillips-Chicago Tribune

The growing community of gay parents deserves a better reflection of their struggles than a kitschy "Kramer vs. Kramer."
Joe Williams-St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Switches between a few primary modes -- agenda-mentary, romance, courtroom drama, tearjerker -- without engaging very convincingly in any of them.
Claude Peck-Minneapolis Star Tribune

Generally abysmal.
John Anderson-Newsday

Gets its point across, and its sad drama. And it spotlights a marvelous performance by Alan Cumming.
Stephen Whitty-Newark Star-Ledger

Cumming is wonderful, and you know something? Trying a little understanding sure doesn't hurt.
Farran Smith Nehme-New York Post

"Any Day Now" has so many ways to break your heart that it seems less a question whether Travis Fine's indie drama will do it, but how.
Rob Thomas-Capital Times (Madison, WI)

Lives down to expectations far too often.
Josh Bell-Las Vegas Weekly

A melodramatic but sincere film overflowing with both compassion and exasperation.
Matt Pais-RedEye

A warmly captured, nicely acted period piece social-issue drama that cycles through familiar territory but also deftly sidesteps conventional wisdom about where it may end up.
Brent Simon-Shockya.com

There's joy in the small moments and fierce, humanist dignity in Alan Cumming's performance.
Robert Levin-amNewYork

I didn't buy anything in this mindnumbingly tedious "message" film.
Austin Kennedy-Film Geek Central

The best thing about "Any Day Now" is how unpreachy it is.
Chris Hewitt (St. Paul)-St. Paul Pioneer Press

A Very Special Movie approach for material that deserves nuance and patience, relying on shameless manipulation to communicate simple ideas on prejudice and parenting.
Brian Orndorf-Blu-ray.com

This poignant if overly sentimental twist on the child-custody drama transcends some of its melodramatic trappings.
Todd Jorgenson-Cinemalogue.com

This gay custody-battle drama beautifully delivers on every level, especially emotionally.
David Noh-Film Journal International

Though set in 1979 West Hollywood, its themes echo loudly in today's courtrooms as well through compelling characters and an unrelenting narrative.
Annlee Ellingson-Paste Magazine

What might have been a typical exercise in socially conscious messaging [becomes] a...touching human drama.
Frank Swietek-One Guy's Opinion

Drama about parenting, discrimination is moving but clunky.
S. Jhoanna Robledo-Common Sense Media

Two gay men try to adopt a teenager no one else wants
Robert Denerstein-Movie Habit

Sweet but ultimately heart-wrenching. (Includes interview with star Garret Dillahunt.)

New Trailer For Snitch

Snitch
Special Review For Movie Snitch
The film tries to paint in shades of gray with vague criticisms of the war on drugs, but the absurdity of its he-man Everyman plot ends up turning its moral palette a muddy brown.
Keith Staskiewicz-Entertainment Weekly

Despite its apparent compromises to noble finger-wagging (initially) and requisite fist-pumping (eventually), Waugh has fashioned a sturdy character-first entertainment out of Snitch.
William Goss-Film.com

Dwayne Johnson tries so hard to be taken seriously in the ponderous and preposterous drama Snitch that it hurts to watch him in much the same way it hurts to watch the weightlifting competition at the summer Olympics.
Mary F. Pols-TIME Magazine

Ultimately, unfortunately, this is a property that probably would have been better as one of Johnson's old, less ambitious films - straightforwardly violent, and crammed with two-fisted revenge - than as this more polite, issue-oriented thriller.
Stephen Whitty-Newark Star-Ledger

What a pleasant surprise.
Rick Groen-Globe and Mail

When the list of the year's most eminently forgettable films is drawn up at the end of 2013, "Snitch" will likely be near the top.
Tom Long-Detroit News

It's intense and involving from the start, even when it turns preachy.
Rich Cline-Shadows on the Wall

Snitch wants to be Breaking Bad. When the camera's on Johnson, it's just bad.
Charlotte O'Sullivan-This is London

Teeth are gritted, shaven-heads stroked, families hugged, moist-eyes blinked - but it's the sight of big things getting smashed to pieces that endures, and ultimately bores.
Mark Kermode-Observer [UK]

Its smaller, quieter moments instill hope that Johnson can stretch even further and become worthy of much stronger material.
Jeffrey M. Anderson-San Francisco Examiner

Dwayne Johnson tries to flex his acting muscles in this smarter-than-usual action movie, based on a true story that gets under our skin.
Rich Cline-Contactmusic.com

Directed by stuntman Ric Roman Waugh, Snitch is also a surprisingly thoughtful affair.
Graham Young-Birmingham Mail

If Snitch ultimately perishes from over-ambition, at least it's an honourable death.
Christopher Tookey-Daily Mail [UK]

Good intentions are all but submerged in nonsense.
Peter Bradshaw-Guardian [UK]

Spurious isn't the word. Po-faced anti-drug film based on the silliest legal loophole ever.
David Jenkins-Little White Lies

Neither clever nor stupid enough to work.
Robbie Collin-Daily Telegraph

Overall Snitch aims to entertain and yank a parental heartstring but events unfold, it lessens the effect and cultivates in a forehead-slapping ending that does raise the odd snigger.
Lisa Giles-Keddie-HeyUGuys

Johnson has the acting chops for this more dramatic fare and the story is exciting and thought-provoking.
Henry Fitzherbert-Daily Express

Consider it time well served.
Elliott Noble-Sky Movies

The script can't quite decide whether it's a serious emotional drama or a pumped-up action flick and it ends up disappointing on both counts as a result.
Matthew Turner-ViewLondon

Overall it's a solid thriller that hints at a life beyond blockbusters for its leading man.
Rob Carnevale-The List

What's undeniably credibility-cracking is the idea of The Rock as an Ordinary Joe in jeopardy.
Simon Reynolds-Digital Spy

Works well as a logistical crime-drama that sometimes veers into far-fetchedness.
John Serba-MLive.com

[Director Rick Roman] Waugh is self indulgent in his approach to the material, and the dialogue occasionally bogs in preachy rhetoric. Once one moves beyond these annoyances, Snitch works as a simple and enjoyable action thriller.
Forrest Hartman-Reno Gazette-Journal

Snitch should have been called Bait and Switch.
Margot Harrison-Seven Days

In a welcome change of gear, over-sized action man Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson puts aside his usual repertoire of grunts, wisecracks...and rampant machine gunning for a more downbeat, dramatic performance in this solid, fact-inspired tale. And it works.
Jim Schembri-3AW

New Trailer For The Call

The
Special Review For Movie The Call
Crude as it is, The Call milks its jump scares and don't-go-down-to-the-basement tension for all they're worth. See it with a full house, if you absolutely must see it at all.
Sam Adams-Time Out New York

Let's call The Call what it is: high quality trash that both diminishes and is redeemed by all the talents who have deigned to bring it to life.
Elizabeth Weitzman-New York Daily News

If you're going to watch a movie in which two people talk on the phone for most of the film, it's not the worst thing in the world for one of the folks involved to have the face of Storm from the X-Men.
-Entertainment Weekly

This is as brain-dead as a movie can be and it assumes the audience will have the I.Q. of a rutabaga.
James Berardinelli-ReelViews

It's a lot better than you might expect a movie like this to be.
Stephen Whitty-Newark Star-Ledger

"The Call" consciously decides to slowly drown itself in the tub.
Laremy Legel-Film.com

Berry's character's brutal, though improbable, determination keeps the intensity high.
Phil Villarreal-COEDMagazine.com

With another whopper plot, this one's saved by a strong turn from Berry, a convincingly panicked performance by Breslin and, as one of the more incompetent screen villains in some time, Eklund.
David 'Mad Dog' Bradley-Rip It Up

The Call is a thriller that works tremendously for the duration of the titular 'call.' The minute that the call ends, it spirals into an avalanche of horror/thriller film clichés that results in disastrously bad and an unintentionally comedic climax.
Blake Howard-2UE That Movie Show

An effective thriller that does an ace job of maintaining your elevated heart rate
Cameron Williams-The Popcorn Junkie

A straight-forward, race-against-time thriller...In an alternate universe, one imagines a disciple of Hitchcock making this film in real time and without any violence.
Jim Schembri-3AW

A tense psychological chiller that ratchets up the tension before collapsing with a predictable finale.
Ed Gibbs-The Sun Herald

Hi, I'd like to order an abduction thriller set around the 911 emergency call centre in Los Angeles. Sure, would you like a psycho with that? Ah yes, and while we're at it can I upsize to the hero being ...er, a heroine ... and black. Done
Andrew L. Urban-Urban Cinefile

Tense and gripping nail-biter that involves us in the moment-by-moment revelations of a terrifying abduction case
Louise Keller-Urban Cinefile

A 911 flick that's actually 341--3 movies 4 the price of a bad 1. The psychological thriller rushes; the psycho-horror scrapes the bottom of the barrel of titillation; the quick ending burner-phones in any remaining character development and plausibility.
Brian Gibson-Vue Weekly (Edmonton, Canada)

A high-concept thriller that certainly has the potential to self-destruct... But genre specialist Brad Anderson gives it a taut, low-budget energy that keeps it pulsing throughout its entire running time.
Jeffrey M. Anderson-Common Sense Media

Put it this way: now educated and abused, good girl Casey no longer has a problem with bad language.
Cynthia Fuchs-PopMatters

Ansioso para se mostrar chocante e audacioso, o desfecho soa apenas como um adolescente tentando impressionar os amigos ao agir como um babaca.
Pablo Villaca-Cinema em Cena

Even though the finish of the film is beyond the reach of believability, somehow it didn't spoil the suspense that preceded it.

Lori Hoffman-Atlantic City Weekly

... the only thing worse than pulling the final punch... would have been showing the script cover to 'The Call 2: Aftercall' after the credits.
Kevin A. Ranson-MovieCrypt.com

Works on the gut, but this thriller is unbelievable
Robert Denerstein-Movie Habit

Everyone watching "The Call" will realize just how implausible its plot is...But even so, this thriller is thoroughly gripping.
Nour Habib-Tulsa World

Shocking, I know, to think the writer of Thir13en Ghosts and Exit Wounds may not have been up to the task of crafting a fully realized narrative.
Pete Vonder Haar-Houston Press

Claustrophobes beware of The Call, Brad Anderson's emotionally rending thriller that transpires almost entirely on the telephone.
Leah Churner-Austin Chronicle

If the last act of the film had been as good as the first act, this would be a good film, but it sure takes a wrong turn at the end.
Robert Roten-Laramie Movie Scope

...a tension-packed, rewarding film with fine performances by Abigail Breslin, Michael Eklund, and Halle Berry.

New Trailer For Compliance

Compliance
Special Review For Movie Compliance
A riveting, horrifying film, shot through with beautifully observed moments of unwelcome truth.
Tom Huddleston-Time Out

Compliance is one of the toughest sits of the movie year 2012. But it's an uncompromising and, in its way, honorable drama built upon a prank call that goes on and on, getting worse and worse for the people on the other end of the line.
Michael Phillips-Chicago Tribune

The point of Compliance, which caused walkouts and shouting matches when it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, is how we are programmed to do things that go against our natural instincts as long as we believe we have the law on our side.
Rene Rodriguez-Miami Herald

This is one insistent film, more evocative of human behavior than movies that take fewer risks ever could be.
Bill Goodykoontz-Arizona Republic

Like a John Hughes movie hijacked by Roman Polanski, this troubling indie effort lays bare the sadomasochism of the American workplace.
J. R. Jones-Chicago Reader

A disturbing, fact-based look at the ways in which people can be bullied into bowing to the demands of authority figures.
Calvin Wilson-St. Louis Post-Dispatch

It never loses sight of its goal to persuade us to be more aware, more questioning of our leaders and institutions, from politicians to priests to, in this case, the police.
Al Alexander-The Patriot Ledger

The only film of 2012 that had me actively booing its villain - a mundane monster who doesn't need to touch his victims to scar them for life.
Margot Harrison-Seven Days

Compliance is a horror movie with no sudden frights, no gore, and not a single scream. It's a surveillance video, capturing us with all our blemishes; a reminder that how we see ourselves is so rarely in line with the truth
Simon Miraudo-Quickflix

That the events in Compliance are taking place in a fast-foot restaurant is equally resonant. The junk food we see being prepared couldn't be more disgusting. Surely, you can't help but think, anyone prepared to swallow that will swallow anything.
Jason Best-Movie Talk

The perfect companion piece to your copy of Fast Food Nation.
Ed Whitfield-The Ooh Tray

Compliance is a disturbing, exciting and instructive film about matters we should all be prepared to face.
Philip French-Observer [UK]

Zobel is canny enough to gradually intensify the level of discomfort to ensure the characters' increasing irrationality feels honest in the situation, regardless of how out-of-whack it seems from a distance.
Alistair Harkness-Scotsman

If a movie's success is measured by its ability to get under our skin and provoke a reaction, then this might be the film of the year. Designed to make us furious, this drama pushes us to the brink as we shout at the characters for being so naive.
Rich Cline-Contactmusic.com

A punchy and effective drama.
Damon Wise-Empire Magazine

An effective, nasty little film from Craig Zobel.
Mark Stafford-Electric Sheep

An uncomfortable, provocative little drama that really gets under the skin and will not be for all tastes.
Allan Hunter-Daily Express

Well as the film is performed, particularly by Dowd as the manager attempting to make order out of chaos, you can scarcely credit what happens.
Derek Malcolm-This is London

I admired its courageous realism, the fact that it dares to be unpopular yet truthful. Unlike most movies, it will give you plenty to think about.
Christopher Tookey-Daily Mail [UK]

The film edges forward diffidently, never quite matching strength of craft to strength of idea. It's creepily beguiling even so ...
Nigel Andrews-Financial Times

Zobel's morality thriller offers uncomfortable commentary on the sport that can so easily be had at the expense of those on the lower rungs of the social ladder.
Anton Bitel-Little White Lies

Zobel's feature film brings out the creepy, banal horror of this culminating event, and the awful contemporary insights.
Peter Bradshaw-Guardian [UK]

Needs more than its "based on a true story" disclaimer to short-circuit our sceptical instinct.
Robbie Collin-Daily Telegraph

It might make you a tougher person after watching it.
Graham Young-Birmingham Post

[It] leaves you in a dark moral place you'd really rather not be.
Tim Evans-Sky Movies

This is a squirmy watch - but of course, it is supposed to be.
Siobhan Synnot-Scotsman

Special Review For Movie End of Watch
Ayer and his cast appear to have so convincingly nailed the way these characters talk and act that you might not even notice the film slipping from workaday grit into out-and-out myth.
Bilge Ebiri-New York Magazine

The actors, both excellent, get right into Ayer's groove. So by the time we arrive at the unsparing climax, we really know and care about these guys.
Elizabeth Weitzman-New York Daily News

Gyllenhaal and Pena are after a lived-in camaraderie and a street-level realism. Pena, especially, succeeds; you buy him every second.
Michael Phillips-Chicago Tribune

The performances here are so sharp that viewers may wish End of Watch has been shot by someone who knew how to find the right point of view for a scene and leave it there.
Richard Corliss-TIME Magazine

Intermittently enjoyable but incredibly frustrating.
Tom Huddleston-Time Out

Jumpy and exciting.
David Denby-New Yorker

This Jake Gyllenhaal buddy/cop drama features some of the best on-screen banter in years.
Tom Glasson-Concrete Playground

Deeply affecting, powerful film that's a thrilling experience. Highly recommended.
Jeffrey Lyles-Lyles' Movie Files

It's time to ride along with the LAPD through South Central, but this is no "Adam 12″. It's a realistic roller-coaster ride told with hand-held cameras and other devices.
Paul Chambers-Movie Chambers

David Ayer's End of Watch is an unflinching cop drama that uses the handheld approach to heighten the drama and escalate the tension.
Jeremy Lebens-We Got This Covered

What gives it life are the performances of Gyllenhaal and Peña. They emerge as beacons of friendship in a bleak world of barred windows, barking dogs and strutting gangsters.
Jay Stone-National Post

It leaves you wondering -- who is filming the Gyllenhaal/Anna Kendrick love scenes?
Jake Mulligan-Boston Phoenix

Nicely balanced between savage violence and sweet human interactions, and it whips along at a brisk pace.
Kurt Loder-Reason Online

The street characters are played by a remarkable panoply of real-life types who speak in a thrilling, totally believable patois.
CJ Johnson-ABC Radio (Australia)

Planning on shooting your next movie handheld? Hoping for that realism dividend? Please read this first.
Ed Whitfield-The Ooh Tray

A strong sense of camaraderie sets this edgy police thriller apart from the crowd. And it's also a change of direction for writer-director David Ayer, who has explored the dark side of police corruption in Training Day, Harsh Times and Street Kings.
Rich Cline-Contactmusic.com

Both actors are first rate, their friendship palpable, their professional conduct (tempered by practical joking and youthful bravado) convincing.
Philip French-Observer [UK]

If I was a big-city American policeman watching this, I would also wonder just whose side Ayer is on. I'd be more nervous about going to the work the next day. Not less.
Graham Young-Birmingham Mail

Ayers's warmest film to date finds meaning and depth in its "I love you, man" exchanges and rarely goes too long without staging some daring detective work and videogame ultraviolence.
Tara Brady-Irish Times

One to watch, but through narrowed eyes.
-This is London

Writer and director David Ayer has created a pair of real, untainted heroes - which makes this a rare cinematic treat you have to watch. End of.
Grant Rollings-Sun Online

The two leading performances are exemplary in their honesty and good-heartedness, with Gyllenhaal in particular showing why he's a star.
