The
Special Review For Movie The Words
A mostly middling drama.
Stephen Whitty-Newark Star-Ledger

The story-within-a-story-within-a-story is so slight and inconsequential, like the tiniest of a set of Russian nesting dolls, that we may be forgiven for letting our minds wander toward bedtime and tomorrow's errands.
Christopher Orr-The Atlantic

The premise is ambitious -- if not a little hokey -- but the meager themes of ephemeral authorship and constructed realities aren't exactly revelatory.
Drew Hunt-Chicago Reader

Bradley Cooper's funniest movie since "The Hangover" - unfortunately, unintentionally this time ...
Lou Lumenick-New York Post

This film's layered storytelling lacks the fluidity, grace, or good humour, to pull off its conceit.
Adam Litovitz-Globe and Mail

Romanticized claptrap.
Frank Lovece-Newsday

This tedious and needlessly convoluted drama ... just meanders aimlessly.
Eric D. Snider-EricDSnider.com

A movie about a bad author who steals the book of a good author, and I'm pretty certain that The Words, if pressed, wouldn't be able to tell the difference.
Will Leitch-Deadspin

It's nothing you haven't seen before in films about struggling artists spending more time obsessing than working.
Al Alexander-The Patriot Ledger

Its long, dry patches of colourless storytelling suggest it makes more sense as a book, one to read before you fall asleep to dream of better movies.
Ken McIntyre-Total Film

In a relevant study of plagiarism, influences and lifetime experiences, The Words chiefly reminds us that the past is indelible.
Graham Young-Birmingham Mail

Like a Russian nesting doll, this film tells a story within a story within another story, playing around with fact and fiction, as well as the nature of creative inspiration and integrity.
Rich Cline-Contactmusic.com

Nothing, absolutely nothing, makes 'The Words' interesting.
Jeffrey Westhoff-Northwest Herald (Crystal Lake, IL)

The Words becomes one of the year's most irritating movies.
Marty Mapes-Movie Habit

Engrossing morality tale about lying, guilt and just how great a character actor Jeremy Irons has turned into.
Jim Schembri-3AW

I like the idea but The Words is a little too preachy, too melodramatic for my liking.
Matthew Toomey-ABC Radio Brisbane

This isn't an Oscar-contending powerhouse drama; it's a film dedicated to expressing its message.
Liam Maguren-Flicks.co.nz

Melodrama built on a shallow, contrived literary device.
Don Groves-sbs.com.au

Literary soapie The Words is mutton dressed as bespectacled lamb.
Simon Miraudo-Quickflix

A fable and a lesson, but it is a thoroughly enjoyable one, delivered with masterful performances and a great sense of storytelling tradition
Andrew L. Urban-Urban Cinefile

A wonderful screenplay in which three stories are skilfully interwoven to deliver a rich and satisfying film that questions integrity above all else
Louise Keller-Urban Cinefile

Maybe it's the timing of the release, coming at the dead zone of post-summer and pre-fall cinematic fare..but 'The Words' has enough going for it to be recommended.
Bruce Bennett-Spectrum (St. George, Utah)

A dreadful misfire, particularly for Cooper, who is otherwise pursuing an interesting career trajectory away from The Hangover series.
Ed Gibbs-The National

Despite an exposition-heavy outer layer, The Words delivers on 2/3 threads that it presents and offers a somewhat evocative meditation on truth.
Ben Kendrick-ScreenRant

One of the meatiest movies of the year ...
Jim Lane-Sacramento News & Review

Things get confusing whenever Quaid appears as the audience is never sure if he is the real bogus author or if Cooper even exists.
Michael A. Smith-MediaMikes

New Trailer For The Hunger Games

The
Special Review For Movie The Hunger Games
The film shows precious little hunger and no sense of game.
David Thomson-The New Republic

Even when two people are just talking calmly, Ross jerks the camera around. Why? As the sense of danger increases, he has nothing to build toward.
David Denby-New Yorker

Ross manages to keep the pacing remarkably swift, given that the games themselves don't start until halfway through the 144-minute running time.
Peter Rainer-Christian Science Monitor

Like the select participants of its savage sport, The Hunger Games stands triumphant, if scarred and a bit wobbly from the contest.
Scott Bowles-USA Today

It features a functioning creative imagination and lots of honest-to-goodness acting by its star, Jennifer Lawrence, who brings her usual toughness and emotional transparency to the archer-heroine Katniss.
Amy Biancolli-San Francisco Chronicle

Watching The Hunger Games, I was struck both by how slickly Ross hit his marks and how many opportunities he was missing to take the film to the next level -- to make it more shocking, lyrical, crazy, daring.
David Edelstein-New York Magazine

Director Gary Ross does a great job in bringing the thrilling novel to life in this uncompromising drama.
John Hanlon-John Hanlon Reviews

The movie is oddly blithe about its central premise. How can this movie set up this monstrous society and this brutal game of genocide and expect us to not only cheer for someone to "win," but also hope she finds someone to kiss in the end?
Will Leitch-Deadspin

Lawrence makes Katniss a heroine every bit as strong, fearless and compelling as the patron saint of badass females, Lisbeth Salander.
Al Alexander-The Patriot Ledger

The filmmakers' devotion to Collins' page-turner will please the book's fans and anyone who likes action, sci-fi, social commentary or a female protagonist with smarts, compassion and survival skills.
Carla Meyer-Sacramento Bee

An exhilarating debut from the bestselling series about teenagers engaged in a deadly bloodsport.
Tom Glasson-Concrete Playground

Given the recent failure of so many big-budget films, the odds weren't in The Hunger Games favor, either. Thankfully, Hollywood got this one right.
Kirk Baird-Toledo Blade

The supporting cast is excellent (most notably Stanley Tucci as flamboyant television host Caesar Flickerman, and Woody Harrelson as Haymitch Abernathy, Katniss and Peeta's troubled mentor).
Tracie Cooper-TV Guide's Movie Guide

Some plot threads are underserved but The Hunger Games is a fascinating and disturbing character drama that successfully captures the core themes of the book.
Ben Kendrick-ScreenRant

Sure this entry is a ripoff of "Battle Royale," but it's still an entertaining ride with great casting that will more than likely please fans of the book and those who've never even heard of it.
Jeff Beck-Examiner.com

Despite a few minor problems, The Hunger Games proves to be a promising start to what will no doubt become the next beloved Hollywood mega-series.
Kristal Cooper-We Got This Covered

While the 12A rating renders any serious violence a tad impotent, there is much more going on here than the fawning and frowning of its soppy vampire peer.
Matt Looker-TheShiznit.co.uk

A retread of a tale that's The Running Man meets Lord of the Flies with a dash of Twilight for tween-adoring measure.
Erick Weber-NECN

I never thought I'd describe a film by Pleasantville and Seabiscuit director Gary Ross as 'whackadoodle,' but if the shoe fits.
William Bibbiani-CraveOnline

The Hunger Games may be a flawed beast, to be sure, but there's plenty of subtext to glean from the narrative, and a slew of wonderfully rich characters worth investing in.
R. L. Shaffer-IGN DVD

While a great ride of a movie, it is also one wrapped around an oddly disquieting message.
Richard Knight-Knight at the Movies

The first genuine can't miss film of the year that you'll want to go back to the theater to see over and over again.
Jeffrey Lyles-Lyles' Movie Files

Katniss embodies all that's better than her Hunger Games opponents, being aptly appalled at what she sees while also learning to manipulate her audience.
Cynthia Fuchs-PopMatters

The Hunger Games stomps the Twilight saga flat, and though I found those films somewhat amusing, this one is the real deal...
Rob Gonsalves-eFilmCritic.com

... Does a more-than-adequate job of introducing a future world and characters I won't mind revisiting. And it gives you a little to think about while you're waiting.
Greg Maki-Star-Democrat (Easton, MD)

Watch New The Passion of the Christ Movie Special

Movie Title : The Passion of the Christ
Release Date : Feb 25, 2004 Wide
Mpaa Rating : R
Genre :Drama

Mel Gibson's well-publicized production The Passion of the Christ concerns the last 12 hours in the life of Jesus of Nazareth. The dialogue is spoken in the ancient Aramaic language, along with Latin and Hebrew. In the Garden of Gethsemane near the Mount of Olives, Jesus (James Caviezel) is betrayed by Judas Iscariot (Luca Lionello). Jesus is condemned to death for blasphemy and brought before Pontius Pilate (Hristo Naumov Shopov), the Roman governor of Judea, for sentencing. The roaring crowd demand his death, so Pilate orders his crucifixion. Jesus is severely beaten and made to carry his cross up to Golgotha, the hill outside Jerusalem, where he is nailed to the cross. Romanian theatrical actress Maia Morgenstern plays Mary, Mother of God, and Italian superstar Monica Bellucci plays Mary Magdalene. Amid much controversy involving Gibson and various religious organizations, The Passion of the Christ received an international theatrical release in February of 2004. In March 2005, Gibson released an unrated version of the film, dubbed The Passion Recut, that eliminated five to six minutes of the more graphic scenes of flogging and crucifixion. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, Rovi

New Trailer For The Passion of the Christ

The
Special Review For Movie The Passion of the Christ
If I were a Christian, I'd be appalled to have this primitive and pornographic bloodbath presume to speak for me.
Jonathan Rosenbaum-Chicago Reader

A negative and spiritually underwhelming experience.
Wally Hammond-Time Out

[Gibson's] film, virtually stripped of Jesus's incandescent views, is little more that a record of one of the thousands of barbarities committed by the Romans in Judea.
Stanley Kauffmann-The New Republic

Mr. Gibson has gone to a lot of sweat and expense to make a movie that doesn't say much of anything new.
Rex Reed-New York Observer

Whereas the words say love, love, love, the sounds and images say hate, hate, hate.
Andrew Sarris-New York Observer

Puts us in a situation where we can't help but feel Jesus's pain. If only Gibson had taken the time to tell more of us why it mattered.
Michael O'Sullivan-Washington Post

Extremely violent, and powerful; for mature teens.
Nell Minow-Common Sense Media

Gibson's passion is all over this film...but his resorting to mawkish, superficial tactics blows the tone off-course from time to time.
Jay Antani-Cinema Writer

With a passionate zeal and the budget to back it, Mel Gibson has created a religious epic which is equally unique, inspirational, and repellent.
Matthew Pejkovic-Matt's Movie Reviews

The film's lack of discretion robs the viewer of his or own conception of Christ's crucifixion. It is an exploitative disservice to "the greatest story ever told," that reduces that illustrious narrative to an extended torture episode.
Cole Smithey-ColeSmithey.com

It's a shame there isn't a good movie deep down in this excuse for gore and sadism.
Felix Vasquez Jr.-Cinema Crazed

All [Gibson has] done...is to trade in the Hollywood conventions of yesteryear for the crasser, more bloodthirsty conventions of today.
Thomas Peyser-Style Weekly (Richmond, VA)

I emerged from The Passion of the Christ depressed and spiritually bruised.
Philip French-Observer [UK]

More sensational than spiritual, this blood-soaked take on the Stations of the Cross retells the Gospels as a horror movie. You can't help asking: where has all the love gone?
Jamie Russell-Film4

For a filmmaker who wants to create an adaptation of the story of Jesus, Mel Gibson's motives seem ironically impure.
Joe Lozito-Big Picture Big Sound

Easily the most controversial film of the year, Gibson's fil is a visually bold, relentlessly violent epos that suffers from a shallow, undernourished narrative and no characterizations to speak of.
Emanuel Levy-EmanuelLevy.Com

By giving us the feeling of experiencing Jesus' thoughts, and by making us privy to his prayers, The Passion draws us toward Christ's full humanity like no film before.
Peter T. Chattaway-Christianity Today

Mr. Gibson has plucked at the rawest of nerves yet I cannot blame him. He is expressing himself through the medium of film and using the text of his bible as the basis.
Jordan Hiller-Bangitout.com

Director Gibson tends toward populist impulses without much artistry or invention; he prefers bombardment to poetry.
Jeffrey M. Anderson-Combustible Celluloid

A tormented movie about torment; loopy, over-reaching and occasionally suspicious. Simultaneously, it is a daring artistic endeavour.
Ian Nathan-Empire Magazine

Incredibly intense, unflichingly realistic and powerfully moving...One of the all-time great cinematic achievements...God bless Mel Gibson.
Chuck O'Leary-Fantastica Daily

One of the best films of this middle-aged decade.
Bill Clark-FromTheBalcony

Sick.
Nick Schager-Lessons of Darkness

This most human of tales is sadly lacking humanity.
Garth Franklin-Dark Horizons

Movie Overview For The Passion of the Christ

"The Passion of the Christ" is a film about the last 12 hours in the life of Jesus. Director Mel Gibson received much criticism from critics and audiences for his explicit depiction of and focus on violence and on christs suffering, especially on the part of the jewish community. The films languages are Arabic, Latin and Hebrew and its actors are laymen which was controversially received as well.

New Trailer For The Details

The
Special Review For Movie The Details
"The Details" is not just entertaining, but potentially useful.
Mick LaSalle-San Francisco Chronicle

As the title suggests, it's all in the details, which writer-director Estes provides in large if not always convincing doses.
John Hartl-Seattle Times

It's hard to make a fine actress like Laura Linney look off-key and shrill, but "The Details" manages to do just that. It's hardly an accomplishment.
Tom Long-Detroit News

"The Details" cancels itself out by being too campy to take seriously and too tragic to laugh at.
Kyle Smith-New York Post

"The Details" wears its quirky heart on its sleeve, signaling (and smirking at) its own silliness, at every opportunity, with an intrusively antic score that makes everything sound like a giant joke.
Michael O'Sullivan-Washington Post

It all adds up to create a dicey morality tale that's as improbable as it is strangely believable.
Gary Goldstein-Los Angeles Times

Despite some tonal stumbles, the film mostly finds its footing and becomes an enjoyable comic enterprise.
Cory Everett-The Playlist

a painfully dull slog through an exceedingly stupid subdivision
Bill Gibron-Film Racket

The script is somewhat provocative in its examination of relationships during absurd circumstances, but its twists eventually become less compelling.
Todd Jorgenson-Cinemalogue.com

Estes never seems to find the balance between dark farce and existential drama, and the cast - especially the goofy Maguire - is left trying to sort it all out.
Sean Means-Salt Lake Tribune

There are a few highlights worth a look and an accomplished supporting cast to ease the oddity along, yet The Details doesn't add up to much despite its rather elaborate design of misery.
Brian Orndorf-Blu-ray.com

It's a Weinstein release, but I don't foresee any big Oscar push for this wacky misfire.
David Noh-Film Journal International

The longer it went on, the more eager I was for it to be over.
Mike McGranaghan-Aisle Seat

A very well cast, R-rated TV sitcom.
James Verniere-Boston Herald

Bad choices and immoral acts go unpunished in dark comedy.
S. Jhoanna Robledo-Common Sense Media

The wacky is forced and unfunny and the misery is nowhere near wretched enough.
MaryAnn Johanson-Flick Filosopher

Maguire, given the chance to play "a dirty philanderer" and "a cheating, cat-killing liar," wrings every laugh he can out of this character. He may not be Spider-Man any longer, but his bug eyes never let him down.
